OUR OLD ALASKA TRAVEL PICTURES

SITE CATEGORY - DESTINATIONS - OUR TRAVELS -  NORTH TO ALASKA

Here's a collection of Pics and a bit of info on some of our Past travels and the places we've lived in our Van's , Motor homes & Buses.
I didn't bother with any dates...or putting anything in any particular chronological order.
This is just a Thumb Nail sketch of our Lives together.
There are some really nice pics here...hope you enjoy them...
Michael & Millie

NORTH TO ALASKA
Here's some pics of our second trip up to Alaska . We took the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry up here...nice trip.
These Pictures we're taken back in our 'Pre-Digital' camera days ...so the photo quality isn't that great. But I Love them anyway.
Beside the pics is a small explanation of each one

This is the Alaska Marine Highway Ferry Terminal down in Bellingham Washington .

Here's Millie , Pooped out and waiting to board the ferry 'Matanuska'

This is one of the other Alaska ferry's , "Columbia" getting ready to head North from Bellingham

I took this pic off the stern of the Matanuska ...it shows the loading dock , where you drive your rigs onboard the Ferry

Here's a pic of Becky , our daughter...all pumped up and ready to head North to Alaska

This is a pic of the Solarium onboard the Matanuska . They have big over-head heaters ...that actually makes it very comfortable to sleep outside

Another Solarium pic. This is where , Old & young ...rich & poor travelers ...who don't want a Stateroom sleep. We've always met really Nice Folks there...on our numerous Ferry trips

Millie in the Solarium

It can get pretty cold & windy on a Ferry trip ...dress appropriately

Mini-Glacier making it's way to the sea

Here's Millie & Becky in Skagway

This is the A&B Brotherhood Hall in Skagway ...the front of the building is completely covered with pieces of driftwood...all done up in some very nice patterns . Very impressive indeed

Here's Millie standing outside of a 'Crib' in Skagway . Back in the old days ...'Working Girls' ...set up 'Shop' in these tiny buildings servicing the Gold Miners heading North

Here we are pulling into the ferry dock in Sitka

An extremely rare , almost Sunny Day in Downtown Sitka

This is Saint Michael's Russian Orthodox Cathedral , plopped right down in the middle of Lincoln Street here in Sitka . It's absolutely Beautiful inside ! Wowser

Indian River Falls in Sitka. It's a bit of a hike to get to the falls ...but it's worth it

This is a pic of the Old Russian Cemetery in Sitka...Spooky & Dramatic place

Totem poles at the National Park here in Sitka

One of the Totem Poles you'll find on the trails at the National Park here in Sitka

Homer , Alaska
We lived up in Homer for a number of years ...in a series of small Motor Homes . After a few Winters of freezing our you know what's off ...we bought a Bus and converted it into a really nice , comfortable & warm Home.

Millie on Homer's Spit

This is the world famous 'Salty Dawg' Saloon on the Homer Spit

A fishing Charter showing off it's catch of Halibut

'The Fishing Hole' on the Spit. Fish & Game plants King , Silver & Pink Salmon every year in the 'Hole'...so they come back next season . It's a really nice thing they do ...it makes it possible for folks without a boat to catch some salmon . During the Summer season it's packed solid with RV's and local folks camping out by the 'Hole'

Millie & Becky at the Fishing Hole watching Salmon jump. I wish I had a few pics of when the King's & Silvers are in . The Fishing Hole gets mighty crowded with Fisher Folk ... I was one of them ...and was too busy trying to catch a Salmon to take any pics

This is a pic of 'The Hole' when the Silver Salmon run was just beginning

Here's a pic of what it looks like around the Fishing Hole when the Tourist Season starts...RV's packed 'wall to wall'

Here's a Limit of Pink Salmon I caught one day at the Fishing Hole

Homer was a wonderful place for catching fish , crabs & Clam digging . Here's some 'Steamers' I dug up one day on the Spit. Being a really big Tourist Spot...Fish & Game tested the clams all the time for PSP ( Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning ) . Wish some of the other areas around Alaska were so diligent about it. PSP is Bad Stuff

Becky all 'Duded up' in her Eskimo Kuspik & Fur Hat ...taking our other kid 'Chewy' for a walk on the Spit

This is a pic of a very good job of Building a pretty unusual Cabin . It's a Fur Dealers shop on the Spit

We Home Schooled Becky for a lot of years ...but, decided it was important for her to be around other Kid's and get used to the 'Real World' . So, here she is with Millie signing up for her Freshman year of High School

1st. Day of School ! ...she was thrilled

Here's Millie trying to keep warm in our miserable little Winnebago Motor Home.

We lived in our Motor Home and our Bus "Home" at Coal Point Trading Company out on the Spit all year round ...and Millie work as a Fish processor there. Here she is boxing up an order of Halibut for shipping

Winter Scene in Homer

Very , Very Cold day ! Ice Chunks floating around in Kachemak Bay

Homer Harbor in Late Winter

The Salty Dawg Saloon stayed open during the winter...which made it nice for us 'Local' Spit Rats

Here's our Bus 'Home' after a non-stop 2 day Blizzard

Our Bus was very well insulated , and our Air-tight woodstove kept us comfortable in 30 below temps easily

Here's a pic of a very nasty Moose standing outside our Bus. He had wandered out on the Spit...looking for food I suppose. Fish & Game darted him and used a big winch to pick him up and put him in the back of their Moose Carrying Truck...and drove off with him.
That yellow collar you see around the Moose's neck is something that Fish&Game does in order to track problem Moose.
But , a week later the Moose was right back again.
Drove our poor dog 'Chewy' crazy ...'Chewy' would sit inside by the Buses door and shiver in anticipation of taking a nice chomp out of whatever that big giant creature was

Here's another pic of the Moose lurking right outside our Bus. Notice those evil red eyes and posture... that's not a good 'sign' when dealing with moose. It was real pain in the butt ! You had to be extremely careful when you went outside.
Millie had a real scare one night , when she stepped out to pick up an armload of firewood and didn't see the moose and thought things were safe.
But , the evil Moose had been hiding out behind our Bus...no doubt waiting for an opportunity like this ...and looking an awful lot some creature possessed , charged Millie.
Poor Millie almost Flew into the Bus and slammed the door.
I called Fish&Game and told them I was going to shoot the Moose if they didn't get right out here and deal with the situation .
They came out and darted the Evil Creature and carted him off again...luckily we never saw the Moose again . Good Riddance !

'Our Toad' , I Loved this Van . VW's keep on tickin' in some very cold temperatures . The only really big drawback with them is their Heaters ...they're awful.
The German's must be immune to the cold our something . :)

This is a Very Cool pic that some of you might recognize . A friend of ours Lived in a cabin with her husband and 3 little terriers ...she came into the kitchen saw the moose & snapped off this pic. She sent the pic to a magazine who published it.
This isn't a 'set-up' photo...when it snows a lot in Homer , you see Moose everywhere in town . They come out of the woods because the snow drifts make it really hard for them to get around and find something to eat

Here's a pic of a extremely Large Halibut that came into Coal Point Trading Company to get processed. The pic doesn't do the fish justice...it was Huge. They had use a fork-lift to pick it up. A fish this big is called a 'Barn Door Halibut'.
The Halibut Derby was in full swing when this fish was caught . But the poor guy didn't have a Derby Ticket...this Fish would have won the Derby 'hand's Down'. He was Heart Broken.
Giant Halibut are fun to see ...but they're pretty much useless when it comes to eating them

Heading South

We sold our Bus 'Home' to a really nice guy in Girdwood Alaska and headed south to Sitka in our Van .
Since you can't drive to Sitka ...we headed over to Seward where we caught the 'Kennicott ' ...one of the Newer Alaska Marine Highway Ferry's .
The 'Kennicott' is a REAL improvement in the ferry system . For years , the only way to get back down to the Southeast portion of the state ...was to drive all the way up to TOK , cross the Canadian Border into the Yukon ...then drive all the way down to Skagway or Haines . And catch a ferry South.
It's a really pretty drive through the Yukon ...but you wouldn't want to try it in the early spring . Lots of snow & ice !
The 'Kennicott' really is a great improvement for us Alaskan travelers.

One thing I have to tell you about the Yukon is...I'm not absolutely sure if it's every 3 years , but it's something like that.
What happens is the snowshoe rabbit population explodes . It's Amazing!
Thousands of rabbits everywhere you look ...and I mean everywhere !
You can't describe it ...you have to see it for yourself . I've seen some huge Caribou Herds up here in Alaska ...but they don't even come close to what a Yukon Rabbit population explosion looks like.
Wowser !

Below are some of the Pics we took on our way South to Sitka

Seward's a nice little town that's nestled between some decent sized Mountains ...the city has it's own campground where North & Southbound travelers stay...here's Becky at our campsite

Sewards City Park campground

Sewards City Park campground

Since we were in Seward we decided to check out The Alaska SeaLife Center
It's a great place to see up close Alaska's denizens of the deep.
We paid $12.50 each to get in...expensive , but worth it .

Seal having a bit of Fun

Another Seal

Big outdoor Sea lion tank

Becky checking out the Fish....
I like aquariums a lot...but after living in Alaska for some time , where Fishing is a big deal.... when I saw this aquarium ... I started thinking , Where's my Fishing Rod !

Sea Lion Pens

Here's pic we snapped while waiting in line to board the Kennicott

The Kennicott's got this neat Elevator that they use to haul RV's , trucks & cars up and down from the vehicle parking deck on the ship. It broke down while we were onboard ...but they fixed it pretty quickly

This is what it looks like 'down below' where you park your rigs...it's mostly empty in this pic . But it filled up quickly . It's a bit intimidating the first time you park your rig on these ferries ...they really pack the vehicles in tight . But , don't worry about it ...they're very professional about it.

Whew !!! Parked onboard and ready to head south to Juneau

The Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau Alaska
We stopped off in Juneau for a couple of days ...and checked out The Mendenhall Glacier .
It's very cool ...you can drive almost right up to the Glacier
