Thermos/Nissan Thermo Cooker |
After reading some Posts over on the
Escapees Forum from Folks who had one of these Thermal
Cookers ... I figured since I trust these folks to steer me
right most of the time... I bought one for our House....
I have to say Wow! This is one nice piece of equipment.....
For those not aware how these things work .... Thermal
Cooking goes back for centuries . Early People would bring
something to a boil and then put their clay pot , wrapped up
leaves or a number of other ancient cooking
vessels into the
ground and cover it up with dirt to retain the heat...then
4-6 hours later dig it up and their dinner or whatever they
called it was done. |
 |
Later people would bring the covered pot to a boil and stick
that into a wooden box filled with hay , then tightly pack
more hay around the pot and over the top...finally covering
the box with a wooden lid.
People still do this....Here's a link to a site about 'Haybox"
Cooking and Such.

When we lived fulltime in our Vans
traveling about selling our artwork...our version
of this very ancient cooking method was to bring a pot of
rice or whatever to a good boil . Then Millie would wrap the
pot tightly with a couple layers of newspaper ...pop that
into a paper bag and stick it into our sleeping bags .
Worked Great every time.
But as I get older I like ease and civilized cooking
techniques...so we got this great cooker.
It cost $124.99 plus $38.10 for shipping so it wasn't cheap.
After it got here , I loved the looks so much that I
thought...Hell this would make a great present for our
Daughters friend who's getting married...so I
searched around and found a much better price of only $99.00
from the manufacturer itself.
UPDATE MARCH 2008
THERMOS/NISSAN doesn't carry these on their
site anymore , but you can still find them
around the net

This picture show the very well made
cooking pot ...and I mean very well made . Its bottom is
hefty so it spreads the heat around the way it should ...
And the outer ,equally well made insulating vessel
