HOUSETRUCK BUILDER EXTRAORDINAIRE ... ROGER BECK
|
Most everyone has people
they admire or even feel are
heroic in stature ... Here
at the Mobile Homestead our
Heros' are the people who do
something creative with
their lives and are
independent types who are
not afraid to be different.
Roger Beck ; Housetruck
builder and author of Some
Turtles have nice shells ...
fits our idea of a Heroic
type perfectly.
He's a very creative and
extremely independent sort
who's built 4 lovely
Housetrucks , lived on the
road for many years in them
selling his crafts ...
eventually settling down to
open an amazing Fine
Cabinetry shop .
And in the interim did
something wonderful and
beneficial for all lovers of
beautiful hand crafted homes
on wheels ...Roger put
together the most amazing
and comprehensive collection
of House Truck & Bus
conversion pictures you'll
ever get to see in his book
'Some Turtles have Nice
Shells". |

We Love his book ,when we
lived up in Alaska ,we used
his book for ideas when we
decided to turn our bus
Latcho
Drom into a House
Truck Trailer hauler .Since
we recently moved back to
Eugene Oregon ,where Roger
lives , I called him up and
asked if it was OK to visit.
He kindly agreed and we
chatted about his book ,
House Trucks , construction
techniques and also talked
about his concept ,similar
to ours ...which is to
construct a lovely
hand-crafted trailer ....
Here's Rogers concept
drawing of what he
eventually wants to build.

I've gotten to visit with
Roger a few times and really
like this person. He
understands that this sort
of thing isn't everyone's
idea of the perfect rig.
But at the same time ,like
all the other great House
Truck & Bus builders
...Roger loves beautiful
hand-crafted Homes on
wheels.
People like Roger are unique
artists and that's what I
love about them.
They don't build their
rolling works of art because
it's a cheap way to go about
this ...nor do they do this
for shock value. This is all
about a recognition of the
beautiful things in life.
Here are some pictures of
Rogers last rolling home he
built back in the 70's ,
which he hopes to remodel as
his trailer hauler , his
wonderful shop and his great
collection of antique toy
trucks & such...

Speaking of Rogers
wonderful Book ...I highly recommend it for anyone
interested in alternative rigs , tiny houses and
pretty things in general.
It's also a History book , containing over 192 pages
of pictures that showcase a time when we were all
quite a bit nicer.
Millie & I lived on the road for many years during
the 70's through the early 90's , so we look at this
book with admiration and a bit of sadness when we
realize that even though a few people still live
this way and a few even create beautiful house
trucks ...the times have changed and the heyday of
the real American Gypsies are over.
Below you'll find some pictures from Rogers amazing
book.
Roger also has a great website (
housetrucks.com )
where you can see many pages of House Trucks & Buses
from all around the globe ..and he also has a
wonderful section with step-by-step photos of how he
built his last house truck....
